There once was a dog named Riley,
who was dreaming of the day he last hiked.
Hikes were his most favorite thing –
there wasn’t anything more that he liked.
One afternoon during a cozy nap,
he pictured this last week’s trip.
Riley remembered all the things he saw –
an adventure he was glad he did not skip.
In this particular day dream,
the mountains were so glorious.
With map in hand and pack on back,
he hiked to the top – “Victorious!”
So tall and grand, the mountains were.
At the top, there was a nice breeze in the air.
So small but mighty, the rocks were.
As souvenirs, Riley picked up a pair.
He glimpsed trees and wild flowers.
What a beautiful and colorful sight –
The sweet smell of flowers near the ground
and the trees above with such height!
Riley looked towards the sky.
He said, “Today is so clear and blue.”
The sun shined down on him,
he was in love with nature – he just knew.
On his adventure Riley met many friends,
including a blue Bird sitting in a tree.
He was chirping and singing beautifully
with his airborne friend, Mr. Bee.
At the base of the truck, Riley gasped.
“Don’t worry about me,” said Snake.
“I just wanted to say hello is all.
What good friends we would make.”
As the two continued on their journey,
a Deer bounced passed the bush.
“Hello Miss…” started Riley,
but she sure seemed to be in a rush.
“I wonder where she is off to?” asked Snake.
But before Riley could speculate,
a huge white Owl swopped down.
Owl said, “That Deer is always late!”
Thump! Thump! Thump!
A small brown Bunny came to explore.
She neared Riley and Snake saying,
“Like the owl, I want to soar.”
“Rabbits cannot fly,” said Riley,
“But you are welcome to join me.”
“I would like that very much,” said Bunny.
“I will enjoy everything there is to see.”
From a small hole in a fallen log,
out popped a very fat Raccoon.
“Can you fellas please keep it down?
I must sleep before the rise of the moon.”
“We didn’t mean to disturb you.”
Snake continued, “We will be on our way.”
Ahead on a mossy rock sat a small Chipmunk.
He asked, “Can I come with you and play?”
The friends continued through the forest,
and near a babbling brook, a Frog croaked.
They had such a fun day together on the trail.
“Can we come to the city with you?” they joked.
It was time for Riley to head back home.
He sadly said all his goodbyes,
but knew he’d see his friends again soon.
He didn’t want to be away from these guys.
From his day dream, Riley awoke.
He smiled, “I will go on a hike tomorrow!”
He could not wait to explore nature
and watch his new friendships grow.
